I thought I had already posted a reply to you but do not see even after refreshing. Anyways, I'll try again.
About 13 months ago I was diagnosed with grade one spondylolisthesis and a herniated disk at L4/5. Two orthos and a neuro recommended fusion. However, they also warned that since L5/S1 was degenerated, due to the extra pressure the fusion would put on it, there was a good possiblity of needing future surgery at L5/S1. Therefore, I decided against it.
I used McKenzie therapy to successfully alleviate the calf pain which was caused by the herniated disk. This has never come back. However, I now have a numb foot, rare twinges of pain in various parts of both legs, and occasional burning in the back of my thighs. The doctors believe this is caused by the spondy and feel the herniated disk is healed (No, my HMO will not pay for an MRI to "check" on it).
I am still doing exercises three times a week in order to strengthen the spine supporting muscles (back and stomach muscles). Since I am now able to perform 99% of the things I used to do, I feel the exercises are working. Not a day goes by that I do not "feel" like something is wrong, but I refuse to be fused until I can no longer enjoy my life.
Good luck Ian.
