In 1998 I had back surgery for a ruptured disc. Fragments had gone into the nerve. An L4-5 Facetectomy and discectomy were done. Three months later, I was told by another surgeon what was left of my facet joint had fractured off, I had an unstable back and needed a pedicle screw fusion. In January of 99, the pedicle crew fusion was done. My surgeon told me it was a disaster in there. I was off work 10 months. In January of 2000 I had another surgery to remove the hardware as it had moved. When they went it, they discovered I hadn't fused and the screws had made such large hole in my back from movement, all they could do was add cadaver bone chips and hope for the best. I've had terrible back & groin pain that increased after surgery #1. I have trouble picking my right leg up to get into the car (sometimes my leg just doesn't seem to work anymore) I also have balance problems and severe groin pain when I pick up my leg. I've been told by three surgeons my fusions have failed, my back is unstable and I need a fourth surgery. The surgeon I've been referred to wants to do a 360 deg. fusion, front and back and use a bone stimulator (worn on the outsid, I believe). From a previous bone scan this new surgeon noticed a dark spot in my pelvis and thought I might have arthritis in the hip which would explain the severe groin and thigh pain. The x-ray didn't show arthritis, but it did show what he's calling a "degenerative cyst" in the right hip joint.
I'm having an MRI Thursday 10/12. He wants to know what the cyst is incorporated in. He wants the cyst taken care of before doing the back surgery in January, if necessary. Can anybody help me? What's a degenerative cyst in the hip joint mean? I've had three failed surgeries and am scared of a fourth. The back problem is a Work Comp issue(that's a pain in itself). Can this hip problem be related to my original back injury? Have any of you had a 360 deg. fusion? Was it successful? Any help or advice will be appreciated.
