I'm suprised that your doc did not give you stool softeners in the hospital the second or third day. I had these..not so much for constipation but because they cut into the back muscles..it would hurt to push (this is really a wonderful topic of discussion..haha!)

Any I would recommend the softeners (they are mineral oil like fran suggested, but in soft gel-caps). Laxatives have a stimulant which can be harsh..stool softeners don't. You can get the CVS brand..they are fine.
