In Reply to: IDET or Fusion? Please help posted by Robbin on October 24, 2000 at 04:21:57:

Hi Robbin and welcome to the board! I haven't had personal experience with IDET (my DDD was too advanced for that procedure), but I did just have fusion surgery at L4-5 and L5-S1, 19 days ago. From what I have heard about IDET, it can have a good success rate, but the results are often only temporary, maybe a year or 2, then people end up needing fusion anyway. Not positive about that, but I've heard that from a couple different sources. As far as surgery pain from fusion surgery, it is certainly survivable. Probably for the first week or so it was very painful, but after that, the pain wasn't all that much worse than what I had before surgery, which was bad, but survivable. Sitting at day 19 right now, my pain is sometimes LESS than before surgery, so I am optimistic that the temporary bad pain will be worth it in the end. (Of course I still have my "bad times" when it gets pretty sore, but all-in-all, I think I'm getting better). Hope this helps. Again, welcome to the board. Hopefully you will find lots of great info. and support here like I did.
God bless your day!
Jill
