I originally posted this on 10/23 but since you never responded, I figured you missed it. I also noticed you posted a response to somebody about 1 minute before mine so my post was easily missed. Anyway, I did not want you to think I ignored your original question.
You responded to one of my posts on 10/13 asking what my back problem is. Sorry to not have answered back but this is the first time I have visited the board. Luckily not due to back problems but traveling for work and also lots of work at home.
In any case, a year ago I was diagnosed with a herniated disk with grade one spondylolisthesis at L4/5. Also, DDD at L4/5 and L5/S1. Through McKenzie physical therapy I have relieved the pain caused by the herniated disk. And through back strengthening exercises, I have gotten the spondy symptoms under control. My symptoms have actually increased lately (numbness in foot, pain in big toe, and burning in my thighs) but not to the point where they affect my daily life.
The main reason I responded to your fusion question was because fusion was recommended for me last year. It was at that point that I researched back pain and surgeries. Because my L5/S1 is degenerated, I was very concerned that if they fused L4/5, I would be back in the operating room in 5 years.
I told the doctors (orthopedic and neuro- surgeons) that I would like to try McKenzie first. It took about 2 months of McKenzie PT before I saw improvement and another month exercising at home before I felt I could live with the symptoms.
Again, sorry to take so long to respond. Hope you can find relief for your pain.
