Hi Mike - sorry to hear about your pain....especially when I know you probably want to be playing with your daughter. Many people get relief from "McKenzie" physical therapy - if you type that into a search engine, you'll probably find lots of info about it. Another option is epidural injections to try to reduce inflammation in the affected area. I know that "discectomies" are often done for herniated discs - different doctors will tell you different things, so do make sure to get at least a couple (preferably more) opinions before you consent to any surgery. Success rates vary tremendously for different procedures, so know one will be able to give you a guarantee, but a good surgeon should be able to tell you your "odds" of having a successful surgery.
