I think you are doing the right thing by exercising your back. Perhaps you could ask your doctor for other types of exercise and alternate them. As Jill says, be very careful when lifting and never bend at the waist when lifting. Strengthening the muscles supporting the spine is the best way to slow/stop the degeneration process. Once you fuse one level, this puts extra pressure on the level above and below. Which in turn causes those levels to deteriorate.
