Getting back to exercising is the smart thing to do. However, weight training might be too severe a stress on your back to start with. How about water aerobics or simply swimming. Fast walking burns plenty of calories also.
If you are set on this, then whenever lifting, make sure you keep the proper lordosis and never lift ANY weight when your back is bent or twisted.
