That's a hard one to answer... If you can get better with excercise you can prolong it for as long as you cant take pain any longer or if you are at risk of permanent damage, etc..
I have been dealing with back pain since I was 18 and I have my episodes and then get over it, so I learned to live with it.. Recently, my herniation is the worst so far, but still, trying to let it get better without surgery... You should discuss the risks with your doctor...
