I don't think avoiding him is the answer either. I mean, you have had a friendship for all this time, and all this time he secretly liked you and dealt with it. If it weren't for your (nosy) friend you never would have known. Talk to him. I'm sure you can find a way to get past this if you both a mature and level headed about it.
