I had vitamin D deficiency. My level was 10, after two months on 50K IU twice a week it went up to 18, two more months at the same Rx and my level was 50. Now, I take an OTC 1000mg tablet everyday.

It's hard for me to say whether I had symptoms or not, I came down with and was diagnosed hypothyroid around the same time. Other than some moderate bone loss (osteopenia) I haven't had any long term effects from the deficiency. I believe it's chronic, untreated, vitamin D deficiency that causes the whoppers - death, cancer, etc.
