Root Canal question
I had a crown removed today and as suspected there was decay under it. The dentist drilled out the cavities and got close to the nerve so referred me to the root canal specialists.
The specialists said that I need a root canal. I'm not sure why. Last time it was because the dentist did the same thing with another tooth which pushed the infection into the nerve and I had an abscess. This time I don't have any pain.
My question is, should the first dentist have just referred me over for a root canal and not tried to fix the cavities? Are some root canals done and the cavity part just left in the tooth? I'm not thrilled to be drilled on twice for the same problem. Plus, I guess after the root canal if the cavities had to be drilled out I wouldn't feel them like I did today.
What questions should I be asking the specialist. I don't understand why I need a root canal since I don't have pain except for the work that was done today that caused pain. Thank for any help. I have my app't with the specialist soon.
