Your dentist did the right thing by getting the decay out. The decay all needs to be removed or you will be wasting your money on the root canal as the tooth would still continue to decay. Unfortunately, even if you weren't having pain, the decay probably went all the way to the nerve and this is why you need the root canal. If you didn't have pain before, you would have had it soon, or possibly not at all if the nerve already died. Either way, the root canal would have still been required. Good luck and sorry about your bad luck. The root canal shouldn't be painful though.
