6 lumps in tonsils

My husband is never sick. About 3 months ago he started feeling like there is a lump in his throat when he swallows. Now, after blood testing, cat scans, chest x-rays and so forth they have found 6 lumps in his tonsils. It is not cryptic, no soreness, and no oozing or anything like it from the tonsils. They are now talking tonsilectomy. Shouldn't they biopsy first? Is there a way to cure tonsil trouble without the horrific action of burning his tonsils out? I had it done, no fun at all, trust me. Isn't there another cure?
