If you're not exercising frequently, start with a brisk walk - say, ten minutes a day, then ramp it up a couple of minutes each week. I'd recommend checking out SparkPeople (which is free) if you want some tools for tracking your food and such.
I'm with Weight Watchers, which operates on the same guidelines that Health Canada puts out on a regular basis (I'm not sure what the USA equivalent is).
