I shattered my heel in about 30 pieces. I choose surgery mainly so that I do not have to spend time and money on "special shoes." Has turned out good for me for the last 10 years.

Every injury is different and one should research and get opinions from at least a couple of doctors before deciding which is right for them. There are no guantees either way.
