If the DDD is the only issue you have at L5-S1, if there is not major nerve compression, it is unlikely they would do surgery at this point.

What typically occurs is that the degenerative changes continue as you continue to age. If there is a loss of disc height, eventually you may have a situation where the disc can no longer provide a cushion between the vertebrae, and you end up with a bone on bone situation. If there is a spinal nerve that ends up being pinched by this, you would have pain in a lower extremity.
