Re: 90 yr old breaks femur without trauma

Hi tbat, yes this can happen! Has your grandmother (?) taken any of the bisphosphonates (Actonel, Fosamax, Reclast or Boniva)? Atypical femur fraxs (frax w/o trauma) can happen in these populations. Forteo is used to repair these when intramedullary rodding is considered (aka exchange nailing) to repair the frax, or even if not. Forteo does not cause these fraxs. I hope your family member doesn't have this, and best of luck to you.

Last Sept a group of individuals testified before the FDA on this problem with BPs. If you are dealing with this, find a good ortho surgeon or endo that can guide your family member through this very difficult recovery. Not trying to scare you, but this is a complex procedure and recovery and should not be taken likely.

Good luck
