Usually, unless there is bladder or bowel involvement, the surgeon will recommend that all conservative measures bee tried. These may include prescription medications, physical therapy and steroid injections to reduce swelling and help with pain. Only when these have been tried and have failed will surgery be considered.

I see you have already had steroid injections...so, depending on how bad the nerve compression is, the surgeon may want to operate to decompress the nerve or nerves....
