Caffeine and sleep?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how many hours before bedtime that a person should not have any more caffeinated beverages in order to sleep well? Sometimes I sleep well if I have caffeine late in the day, and other times I don't sleep well if I've had no caffeine, so I'm not sure what to think. Do you think that it is over-rated that too much caffeine late in the day interferes with sleep? Afterall, the British have tea late in the day, and it doesn't seem to affect them adversely. Thanks in advance for any information on this subject.
