| | Allergy to Benadryl
When I was in jr high, I was in a bike accident, injuring my spleen. I was hospitalized for 2 wks, being pumped full of Benadryl. I had always taken Benadryl as a child and never had a problem with it. I was discharged on a Thurs, being able to return to school that Mon, but no gym for a month or any contact sports. That Sun, I was not feeling well. I couldn't explain why I felt so bad, just didn't feel right. My mom took me back to the ER. They drew my blood. I had basically NO WHITE BLOOD COUNT. I was put in strict isolation and spent another 1 1/2 wks in the hospital. The only reason all the physicians and allergists could come up with was that the Benadryl had done this. I wear a medical ID tag informing people and medical professionals of this allergy. When I tell ER physicians that I am allergic to this, I get looked at like I'm nuts. I had one ER physician google this type of reaction. He came back in to the room and told he had googled it and, even though it is very rare, people can be allergic to Benadryl and have the same response that I did.
Anyone can become allergic to anything, at any time in their life. Just because you took something in the past and where fine with it, doesn't mean that you can't become allergic to it at some point down the road.
