There is a good possibility you have a decaying tooth remnant and infection under the crown. You really need to get to a dentist and have this checked out. This could turn into an abcess and affect the bone the tooth is imbedded in, which is serious. Please get it checked ASAP.

Could the infection be the result of the crown being put in improperly and if so, does the dentist have any responsibility to fix it on his own dime or at least at a discount rate? I'm asking because I currently do not have insurance and will be paying out of pocket.
I'm guessing no since it was put in over 5 years ago but just trying to cover all my bases.
