PCOS, what's next?
Hello. I am 18 years old and have been diagnosed with PCOS for almost 2 years now. I have never had regular periods. I started my period when I was in the 8th grade and have had about 5-10 since that time.
After I was diagnosed, I was put on Metformin to control the symptoms that I was having including abdominal pain. Well, in January I started having severe stabbing pains in my lower right abdomen. I thought it might be my appendix, but it went away right before we were about to go to the ER. About a month later I scheduled an appointment with a gynecologist to have an ultrasound because I was still having severe pain. After I had to drink all that water and all the pushing of the ultrasound, I was in so much pain that I almost passed out and was taken to the ER.
With the help of a lot of pain meds, I was able to get an ultrasound. They found a 7-8cm cyst on my right ovary and a 7-8cm cyst on my left ovary. After talking with the doctor, we decided to wait about a month and see if they would go away because they were just simple cysts. After a month, the pain seemed to have gotten a lot better. After another ultrasound, we found that the cyst on my right ovary had grown to about 10cm and the one on my left had shrunk to 5cm. So I was put on birth control to see if that would help. I'm almost done with my first month of birth control, and the pain is getting worse.
A month ago, I would have sharp stabbing pains that would reside after a few minutes. Now I have sharp pains that last a long time. And I can feel pressure all the time. I've decided that I am going to wait until the original time of my next ultrasound appointment which is in about a month. Because whatever steps we have to take next will have to wait until I am out of school.
Has a similar problem every happened with anyone else? If so, what is going to be the next step?
I would really like to avoid surgery, but I know that I cannot live with this type of constant pain.
