Re: Ground Glass Opacity

Ground glass opacities are generally sign of pulmonary fibrosis, a type of scarring that affects the lungs. It can be from previous infections or the inflammation that occurs with various autoimmune diseases. It is not cancer. It can cause a dry cough, shortness of breath especially with exertion, so poor exercise tolerance, and sometimes low oxygen levels. If the biopsy is being done by bronchoscopy, you will be sedated and asleep during the procedure and wake up when it is done. You will get an IV and may have a little sore throat for a couple of days afterward. It is important if the biopsy shows fibrosis to try to find out why it developed. Sometimes it is idiopathic (no known cause), but if the underlying cause can be identified and treated, it may help prevent it from getting worse, or at least slow the progression of it.
