Re: facial paralysis after tumor removal

I have a 3 year old son who had a brain tumor removed from his brain stem last July. After his surgery, he had facial paralysis on the right side. The surgeon immediately connected us with a plastic surgeon trained in nerve transplants. In order to determine if the damage is permanent, 4 months after onset they did an EMG to test the nerves. She determined it was permanent and we proceeded with a nerve graft in November. We are waiting for the results of the graft as the nerve grows a millimeter across the face per day. Unfortunately, there is a window of opportunity for the procedure (I believe 12 or 18 months). She also told us that there are other procedures that can be done, such as transplanting part of the inner thigh to the face. I would recommend contacting a plastic surgeon or perhaps start with looking up the facial paralysis institute.
