I sure don't blame you for whatever you feel. We cannot control other people. Just ourselves.
I think is Ok to address the bad mouthing as long as you only simply say you are sorry to hear that, and leave it alone.

I would, myself, apologize to the child for trying to 'fix' him/her, and explain that how they feel is not their fault. Don't try to fix this situation, either.

They are kids just being normal kids. Be understanding and don't take it personally. It isn't fair but it is easier for kids to blame you than their own parents, neither of which put a stop to this.
