? about nissen - Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Hello, I am 30 yrs old I've had gerd fo about 7-8 years and have used aciphex since the beginning to control acid and it has worked well for that. Even though it has taken care of the acid most always I still have had reflux just not burning but continuous mostly an annoyance. I had and egd last year to check my esophagus and didnt look too bad no barrets according to John Hopkins but surgeon who did egd said he could tell I had reflux. He suggested at the time I get a nissen because of the ongoing reflux not being controlled by medication, and my age having to take medicine the rest of my life which hopefully will be a while. Also I've had thse pains in my right side sometimes center of my belly to right side just under my ribs for a few years now and they are mainly dull aches to sometimes sharp pains and they ran a hida scan on me and my gallbladder was functioning at 33.5 % which my surgeon said he was 80-90 % sure removing my gallbladder would relieve my pains. Also I always have burps after burps all day even if I just drink water this alone is so aggravating it interfers with exercising and talking to people as well as trying to kiss my wife for any long period at a time. I also have had ibs with constipation for a few years also but with taking citrucel as well as 1 fiber wafer to supplement daily that Is pretty controllable. Has any one else had these symptoms together and also what is your opinion about having the nissen done? Long term would it be worth it? Any advice please. Thanks

Have you considered having the Stretta procedure? It seems to be alot less invasive and risky. I have a small hiatal hernia and the GERD symtoms that are associated with it and am considering doing this in the future. I would make sure you do a lot of research online and of the doctor before you have any procedures done. Good luck.

Hi Jathan,

Don't believe the docs so quickly about the Nissen procedure.... or the gall bladder removal... Many have had these surgeries and are not much better.
Some are worse, since eating solid food after a poorly done Nissen is almost impossible. Just like with any surgery, if you must do it, be sure that you
choose an artist with a huge record of success.
If you have swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) now, the Nissen is NOT for you.

Many have been told that that a gall bladder is the cause of their problems, but they have found out that the pain exists afterwards and the constant drip of bile causes persistant burning and diarrhea. It also increases the chance of colon cancer.
If you do not have frequent pain after eating that causes severe bloating and nausea for about 4 hours or more, then don't blame your gall-bladder.
Many people have a GB function that is less than 20% and and still use it
well. Probably half the population has some gall stones or at least sludge
which causes a painful episode at least once in their lives. They may never have a repeat of this. Avoid severe diet restriction which tends to increase the formation of Gallstones.
