Hi there. Not sure if anyone on here can help me or not.
I am a 32 yo female. Have had these symptoms on and off for the last few years, but this year they are have incresed and presistent.
I have a feeling of thick sticky mucous in my throat that wont move up or down. When by a miracle I CAN get something up, it is clear, sticky, thick and gluelike. The abundance is cyclical througout the day- some times worse than others. Seems to be worse when I eat (anything) and also when I cry or yell.
I feel like I constantly have to clear my throat, which is unproductive. Sometimes it feels the mucous is sitting on my gag reflex and It gags me. Sometimes the sensation of the phlegm makes me so nervous because I fear it will block my esophogus and I cant get it up or down. I already drink 3 quarts of water a day and nothing works.
Also: I do NOT have any noteworthy nasal symptoms (955 of the time), no runny nose or congestion, no chest congestion and no cough. This all leads me to believe its not sinus related.
I have seen two ENT's now who scoped me and said "reflux". I was on Zantac which did nothing. Now I am on Protonix. I just finished Week 2. I thought the last couple of days were a little better (not phenomenal but some improvement). Then today I am right back to my worst ever!!
My questions:
-Has anyone else with this ever had these symptoms?
-What did you do?
-How long does the medicine take to work? Should I worry that its been 2 weeks?
I feel like i am losing my mind. Its affecting my quality of life. Any advice would be helpful. And some reassurance that the mucous wont block my esophogus? Thank you. Sometimes I just feel I cant go on like this.

These acid reflux meds do take awhile to work so hang in there. You need to try and relax. Being nervous about things closing up on you and not being able to breathe only makes it worse. Try taking deep breaths and continue to drink water. I know how you feel, sometimes it seems like you are never going to feel right again, but hang in there. I know that you hate to hear "these things take time" but they do. Best to you.
Yes - I had this, too. And chronic sinus pain along with it. I thought the mucous in my throat was from post-nasal drip. ENT said that the mucuous was being produced in the throat as a result of chronic irritation from reflux. Put me on Nexium 40m twice a day. Took about a week and a half and the symptoms began to disappear.
You may not be on the right med for you, or need a higher dose?
I have had exactly the same symptoms. Last August I started with a cough which lasted until November. Since November I have had constant pflegm at the back of my throat that will not budge. It is very frustrating, and I can constantly feel it there. Drinking water does not help, in fact it seems to make it worse. Also my saliver is very thick. I have seen a pulminary specialist (for the original cough in particular)-- xrays, catscan. I went to an ENT in December -- he gave me Allegra & a nasal spray -- no help. I am going back to the ENT. I did find on the web that it might be an allergy -- apparently dust up the nose could cause the constant sinus condition -- if it is that. Also, the ENT said it was not reflux -- he put the scope thing up my nose and down my throat.
Let me know what you find out. I will go and see an ENT next week -- I will post here with results. Cheers.
If 40 mg of Protonix do not work, switch to Nexium. The condition you are referring to indicates you have some symptoms of LPR - laryngopharyngeal reflux - the acid is going pretty high up your throat. Standard treatment for LPR is differen than treatment for GERD. GERD is treated with a 1x 40 mg dose of a PPI every day. LPR requires 2 doses of a 40 mg PPI per day, for a total of 80 mg per day. If your insurance will cover it, get a prescription for Nexium. It is the gold standard in LPR treatment.

Sounds like LPR but its hard to be sure, for many of us LPR can be very hard to treat. See if you can find any way to confirm the diagnosis, also if its LPR there are many adaptations you can make to help treat it.
Hi. This is my first time posting to this cite. I can relate to you - I have exactly the same thing - the choking thick clear phlegm in the back of the throat. I don't think it's coming up from stomach acid. I really believe it is coming from above - from the sinuses. I belive it is an allergic reaction to something in the environment - could be anything. Your body is trying to clear it out by creating this aweful thick phlegm. I have been using claritin and tylenol sinus caps. It helps a LOT with the symptoms, but is not a cure. To cure it, I believe we have to clean out the irritants we're having an alergic reaction to that have attached to the mucus membranes in our sinuses. What can do that? Well, I'm certainly going to find out because I don't want to live on drugs to battle the symptoms of allergies. So, I found a book by Dr. Jordan Rubin called The Maker's Diet. In that book he talks about a system he developed for cleaning the mucus membranes called Clenzology. I'm going to try it. You can order it online - just google the maker's diet and it will come up. There are a lot of companies that sell Dr. Rubin's products for 30 - 40% off, so look for those, too. Well, I'm going to give it a try and maybe you can do so, too, and we can report back our experiences. Best regards to you all. Debrabee.

I have suffered for years with this thick mucus in my throat, i have fought with this mucus for so many years and had so many doctors tell me it was my sinuses that i just gave up. One day i mentioned this to a friend and he suggested that I could be having a reaction to eating peanuts. I thought about what he said and stopped eating all forms of nuts. About 2-weeks later the mucus was totally gone. I still had a can of mixed nuts in the cupboard so, i had a few for a snack. Within 30-mins. i had that thick mucus in my throat again. i waited a few weeks and it was gone. I started trying different types of nuts hoping to figure out which nuts caused the mucus. Following several months of trial and error i believe all nuts cause this mucus. I hope this helps you. When my friend suggested the nuts could be causeing the problem, i almost didn't try. Today I thank God for this help. I never eat nuts or anything with nuts in it and i am mucus free and proud to pass this information on to everyone that has this problem. I have helped so many people that it makes me feel good just knowing that today i might be able to help someone else. If tih helps you please tell everyone you know and hopefully they will tell someone that it will help!
