Hi everyone..I'm 49 .I've been i prilosec 10 mg's for about 12 years...and i always had some kind of side affect from it, like constipation, bloating, ibs...Lately the bloating got worse and i had to add acidity drinks to my diet to help with digestion...
After doing some research on the net, i ran across a sudject about H.pylori...
and ulcers...After reading about this i went to see my doctor and having a blood test to check for it...I haven't got the results back yet..BUT in the meantime i found several websites on a herb called Mastic Gum...Apparently this herb is an alternative to antibiotics for killing the organism H.pylori. I don't know if i have H.Pylori but taking this mastic gum also helps with GERD and other stomach disorders...
Its been 4 days since i have taken prilosec and i have no reflux, heartburn or any symptoms of it so far...
I hope this works..I'm sick of prescription drugs and side effects..
You can do a search for Mastic Gum .....The Vitamin Shoppe and other health food stores should carry it
Which kind: there is Chios, and several other types of mastic gum. Is this a gum to chew or a tablet? Curious as I'm willing to try all things.
Chios mastic gum is what i'm taking in pill form 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening...This is day 4 with no prilosec...I'm amazed so far..and if i do start to have some reflux i'll just take some tums with the mastic..

Reason: pills or tablets
...... you sound just like me. We are both the same age, I have had Gerd now for 7 years, and I too am sick and tired of taking drugs, both OTC and prescription.
When I first was diagnosed with Gerd 7 years ago, my doctor ruled out H pylori, saying I did not have it.
Also like you, I get the bloating and take 3 or 4 tablespoons of lemon juice with my supper most everyday to help with digestion. I also find if I keep my diet mostly alkaline instead of acidic , that helps too.
In other words, eating more veggies and fruits and good quality water.
Let us know about your H pylori tests when you get them back. Until now, I have never heard of mastic gum until you mentioned it on a thread I started here called, A pear ??
I will have to look for this mastic gum......

ps ..... I wonder if the bloating may be caused by too many carbs?? Just a thought.
Hi, its now been over 7 days with no prilosec...Very slight reflux occasionally..i take a few tums for it....My H.pylori test came out negative...This was done with a blood test..I'm not sure if its accurate or not...I went to a gastro doctor today and made an appointment for an encoscopy and a colonoscopy at the same time...Not to thrilled with this whole situation..but i know it has to be done....Being off of the prilosec for the last week has me concerned....yes i have no gerd but why??? I was diagnosed many years ago with a hiatal hernia....lately i haven't had that hungry feeling in the morning or during the day....Did the prilosec cause a low acidity symptom in my stomach???.Or did the mastic gum cure something......I guess i'll find out....very nervous
I took Mastica for 2 weeks and it just so happened that a Gastro Doc had scheduled an endoscopic exam for gastritis re-check 6 months previlously and the stomach inflammation was cleared up --- I never told him that I had Quit the Prilosec and Aciphix after only 2 months--- was not working???
I continued the Mastica along with a probiotic supplement for about a month.
Mastic gum has been used by the Greeks for hundreds of years to heal Gastro/ stomach problems -- long before H.pylori was ever heard of--- It does more than is really known in healing GI problems.
No test done i guess because it cannot be patented as a drug??
H.pylori bacteria was discovered by Dr.Barry Marshall in Perth, Australia in 1982 but not acceptable treated in the USA with antibiotics until the mid ninties.
I took 2 --500mgm capsules twice daily. Between breakfast and lunch-- then between lunch and dinner.
Don't forget to take a probiotic supplement before going to bed--- I use several probiotics PB-8, Pearls and Culturelle. All are some what different but are Good !!
I did not take a PPI when I took Mastica but I think it would be OK to take -- it just reduces your stomach acid. That should not affect Mastica's action!!

The only brand I use is from Allergy Research Group-- that is sold in bottles of 120 capsules -- 500mgm each. And, I buy it from VitaCost online.
There may be others on the market just as good but I have just not used them.
