| Re: Why do we get thick mucus with LPR?
Hi imabig,
Mike 2005 may well be right but my understanding is that the mucous with LPR is most probably Post Nasal Drip. LPR has been sighted as the most likely cause of PND in the absence of significant sinus problems or infections (Sinus Centre - US website). It is sighted in most LPR info as a common symptom. In another LPR thread others have noted, myself included, experiencing a stinging sensation in our nostrils. This we feel is the acid irritating the nasal membrane. It also seems to slow down the cillia movement which is vital for nasal drainage to thin and clear down the throat and be swallowed. Unfortunately when interfered with the cillia cannot do this and the drainage slows which produces a pooling effect of thick mucous at the back of throat and tongue. This mucous is a major factor in bad breath (unlucky for me) as the bacteria on the back of the tongue and throat feed on it's protein enriched contents. It is also the causal factor in the creation of tonsil stones (unlucky for me again)although the crypts themselves are thought to be caused by many periods of tonsilitis or LPR.
Do you get blocked nostrils or stinging sensation ?
