feeling of something in my throat

good morning, i was recently told that i had acid reflux and have been on nexium for 7 weeks now. i think i have had reflux for years the more i think back, i have had a dry cough and sinus problems for years. i would wake up in the middle of the night with a tickling feeling in my throat and then start coughing. i never thought of reflux because i did not know the symptoms the reflux could cause. about in jan or feb i noticed that i had a feeling of something irritating my throat at times, it was good at times and then some days it was very annoying. i thought it was my rotten tonsils but the ent doc said my tonsils could come out if i wanted them to. so i have had this irritation since about jan or feb and i went to a medical doc and told him what was going on and he said i probably have reflux so he put me on protonix once a day but this did not work, i still had the abd burning, throat irritation, throat burning and sternum burning. so after 3 weeks of protonix and switched to nexium 40mg daily which i have been on for 7 weeks now. i only occassionally get the stomach burning and the cough is rare and my sinuses are clearer then they have been for years. i actually sleep with my mouth closed. my concern is this throat irritation. some days i have no problems with it at all and other days, i feel as though my throat is full of cotton, or is burning or has a glob of something in it. i have no problem with my voice or swallowing. my question is can anyone tell me how long i will have this throat problem. it wears on a person mentally and i have anxiety so at times the anxiety is very high and feel like i am going nuts. this throat thing is mostly on the right side of my throat but can be down the middle or to the left. if anyone can help me i would apprepriate it.

Re: feeling of something in my throat

I too have similar symptoms to what you are describing. I was diagnosed with LPR or "laryngopharyngeal reflux" last October. This form of reflux differs from GERD and is usually treated with PPI threapy that includes a PPI taken 2 times a day. Do a web search on Laryngopharyngeal reflux and many, many web sites will come up to give you further information. For me, it started out feeling like I had a hair stuck in my throat-just an irritating little tickle that wouldn't go away. It progress to the feeling of cotton as you describe, or I described it as my throat felt like it was coated with peach fuzz. From there it went to what I call the "hair ball phase"... I felt like I was a cat with a hair ball stuck in my throat. Much throat clearing, coughing, etc. Finally I felt like I had a grapefruit stuck in the back of my throat. Mine is also usually on the right side. I called my doc at the hair ball phase but it took me 6 weeks to get an appointment with my ENT. He diagnosed me with LPR by using a scope put down my nose to examine my throat and voice box. I started Prevacid 30 mg 2x a day, but it takes MONTHS for this to get better. Usually 6 months or more. I as doing very well on Prevacid but I am now on Nexium 40 mg 2x a day as my insurance company dropped the prevacid as a "prefered drug" (one must ask "preferred by who" the patient or the insurance company...) After about 6 months of treatment I began to feel pretty good, and now after 9 months I can tolerate living with LPR. I don't know if I will ever be "symptom free" but on a whole I am able to go about my regular routines and live life again. I have my good days and my bad days still, and probably always will.

A few months ago, I was seeing a sports medicine chiropractic professional for a treatment of a shoulder injury and mentioned to her that I also suffer from refulx. She is also a nutritional expert and suggested I try digestive enzymes and probiotics to support my digestive system. I have been using both for about 6 weeks now and I think it really helps me. I also have worked on improving my posture so I am not sitting at my desk at work slumped over my computer which can force the stomach acids up my throat. Also to relieve the "peach fuzz" symptom I chew gum. It is soothing to my throat. I know none of these things are going to "cure" us but it makes the symptoms more bearable for me as I wait out months of PPI thearapy that it takes to treat LPR. You are not alone. There are many threads on "healthboards" that deal with LPR, and much practical information from others with this uncomfrotable problem. Keep us posted to your progress. We need all the help we can get from your experiences too!!! Good Luck!!

Re: feeling of something in my throat

lisman thanks for your reply, i swear at times i am going nuts and i am glad that someone else has these similiar symptoms, no not going nuts but the reflux, lol. someone suggested aloe vera juice because it is soothing so i bought some. i do have to say that the nexium has helped with the stomach buring and chest pain but only i could get rid of this throat thing, sometimes it burns when i eat but i will be patient.

ladonnac, it sounds like you too are suffering from this gerd nightmare. mine started to get worse about 2-3 months ago, i noticed abd discomfort, not severe but like i did too many situps or stretch a muscle. it can be very frightening. i never knew reflux could cause so many symptoms and discomforts.

Re: feeling of something in my throat

GERD and LPR are two different types of reflux. GERD affects the esophogus and stomach lining, and LPR affects the larynx and pharynx (voice box and upper throat ). Both GERD and LPR are forms of acid reflux, as it is stomach acid that is doing the damage in both cases. Because the upper throat and voice box are composed of very delicate tissues in comparison to the esophogus and stomach, thus it takes a smaller amount of acid to do the damage. Since the voice box is so small and fragile, just a drop or two of frequent acid can do a lot of damage. Most of the time, those suffering from LPR, do not have heartburn (I do not) or other typical symptoms of GERD that you discribe. LPR is often called "silent" reflux as those who have it, usually do not know it until the damage is done. Symptoms do not appear until the larynx is already damaged (or fried as the case may be). That's why it often takes so very long to treat the problem. The stomach acid must be suppressed for a long time for the damage to reverse itself, and healing to occur. In terms of treatment of LPR usually an individual needs 2x a day of a PPI to suppress the acid sufficiently for several months. Statistics indicate that 50% of LPR sufferers still have symptoms after 6 months of double dose (2x a day) of PPI's. I am living proof though that there is hope. Though I am not completely symptom free, I am MUCH, MUCH better.

The feeling of a "lump in the throat" is the sensation from the vocal cords being swollen and irritated from the acid. However an individual can have the two forms of reflux at the same time. I am fortunate that I do not have regular GERD, however the discomfort from the LPR I sometimes think is worse. But then, I have never had GERD so I really do not know. Usually a GI doc treats GERD and an ENT treats LPR. In the mean time, watching what you eat also helps. The best diet to combat these acid problems that I have found is-- "if it tastes good, and has some flavor--spit it out..."

Also there is a very good post from someone with the sign in of "Neverenoughslee" originally dated at about at the beginning of this year. It is called "LPR Info.-went to specialist". I have dug around on the GERD board and have posted a new entry on this thread to bring it forward for your reference. Also another thread originating by this same poster is called "Interesting info. on LPR." I have also posted on it to bring it forward for you. This thread contains a reference to a web article from a medical journal with terrific info. about LPR. I found this article very informative and well worth your time to try to find it on the web. This poster has had many threads with a lot of good information. I haven't seen a post from them in a long time, I wish they would post again to let us know how they are doing.

Re: feeling of something in my throat

Hi ladonnac70,

I also agree, if you have continued stomach/esophagus problems, you should go to a gastro. Dr. They can do an upper endoscopy and see if you might have a hernia (at the junction of your esophagus and stomach), or esophagial varicies, or gastritis, or some combination of gastro problems. If you have not already had one, you should.

Hope you feel better soon. Wannabe

yes, you can feel food going down into your chest. I have LPR, this symptom has become much less noticable since I started on PPI's a week ago.
