Severe LPR recalcitrant to Nexium, Help!

I was diagnosed with LPR beginning of the year and have been taking Nexium 40 mg twice a day since April. I had a fiberoptic laryngoscopy yesterday and the arytenoid cartilage above the vocal cord area is still inflammed. Back of throat red with cobblestone appearance. The ENT doc said it looked like a classic textbook image of LPR.I am so disappointed. I have followed all the recommendations for diet, lifestyle changes etc. to no avail. I have severe burning in the back of my throat, headache, ear pain and flu-like feeling. It has consumed my life. The ENT doc said to keep taking the Nexium. I guess I'll have to take the Nexium AT LEAST for another six months to see any difference. What a drag. This was my FIFTH ENT doc in town because I wanted to get more opinions on treatment options. I have a question for all LPR sufferers out there...Do you have SEVERE throat pain like I do? Does it feel like you have the flu? Do you get a headache and ear pain? My symptoms seem so severe. It's worse at night and in the morning I'm in so much pain I can barely get out of bed. Once I get up and get going it lessens in severity. Do any of you take Carafate to help? I asked the ENT doc about it and he kind of just dismissed it. I'm only 49, was active before all this started, never smoked, occasionally drank socially, basically healthy until this dreaded disease surfaced. Do you think I should go to an infectious disease specialist since the pain is so severe still? Accupuncturist? Holistic/Homeopath? I'm amazed how the ENT/Gastroenterology medical community is so behind the times in coming up with aggressive effective treatments other than surgery/fundoplication. I read about the Stretta procedure and Endocinch but too new and not sure so effective for LPR. I would like to hear from others who are going through the same thing as me. Thanks for letting me vent!

Re: Severe LPR recalcitrant to Nexium, Help!

I haven't actually been diagnosed with LPR because I refuse to go through the tests only to have the same results....Nexuim. But, I do have many of the same symptoms as you: aching throat with shooting pains, earache, swollen glands, headache and constant acid reflux.
I'm taking 80 mg of Nexium and some days it doesn't even touch it.
I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this. It's just awful.

Bethany,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear your're suffering as well. How long have you had LPR? I just came back from the health food store to get something different for the sore throat. They recommended Licorice Root Extract, so I bought some and tried it and it does seem to ease the throat pain. Its called Zagarese 100% organic Licorice tronchetti. Slippery Elm lozenges are good for the throat too.

Re: Severe LPR recalcitrant to Nexium, Help!

I take 40 mg of Protonix daily....Mylanta if I feel the throat pain coming on and that seems to help greatly....have the aloe vera gel in my cupboard but haven't tried it...can't tell if the papaya digestive enzymes are helping....
A few times I have noticed that taking a Xanax greatly improves the symptoms. I notice most my problems are between 5 and 9 p.m. at night. I exercise a lot and have been trying to eat more laxative-inducing foods. I don't believe change of diet does squat. I can go weeks at a time feeling like a million bucks while eating well, then weeks at a time feeling horrible while eating well. There are days that I can have coffee without one symptom then days where anything I put in my mouth makes me sorry.
I wish I had something more encouraging to tell you, but it sounds like the idiot medical community has sent us all up the same creek without a paddle.
