I had my endoscopy today

Hi everyone. I had my endoscopy today and I just wanted to give everyone the details of my experience. In case anyone is having one soon and wants to know what to expect.

When I arrived at the office I had to give a urine sample. Then I was told to put on a gown, slippers, and a hair net. I was allowed to leave on my own pants and socks. They hooked me up to an I.V. , those oxygen things for your nose, and various monitors for my heart rate and blood pressure etc... I was wheeled into the operating room about 20 minutes later.

My doctor was there as well as an anesthesiologist and a nurse. The doctor had me turn on my left side, he put a mouth piece around my teeth and the anesthesiologist told me to count to 10 and that I would be taking a nice little nap he also said that I might feel a slight burning as he put something into my I.V. (I didn't). I got to 10 and said "um i'm still awake" he told me not to worry and that was the last thing that I remember. When I woke up I was in the recovery room. Apparantly I had a conversation with the nurse about my sister that I don't quite remember. They gave me juice, and after I was able to sit up, an oatmeal cookie. The doctor told me everything looked fine and that he took a biopsy to test for H.Pylori. My results will be back in a few days.

If I do not have H.Pylori, he wants to see me in 4 weeks, if I do, sooner. I saw pictures of my esophagus and intestines (yuck).

After that, I was able to leave, with my husband to drive me of course. I still feel a little odd. All together from the time I was wheeled into the operating room til the time that I left the hospital was about 1 hour.

Believe me when I say, do not worry. You are not aware of or do you remember anything unpleasant. Right now I just have a mild sore throat. I think the worst part was waiting to go into the procedure itself.

Hi taape, I hope this helps calm your fears a little. I know I was terrified this morning and am so glad it is done. I wish you the best of luck and hope that everything turns out okay

Re: I had my endoscopy today

Hi! I am a "thyroid board" person who has just migrated to this board for the first time -- I'm totally freaked out right now -- I won't go into the whole mess but I'm hypothyroid and have been going through one health crisis after another for 6 weeks. Each has "self-resolved" despite tons of tests all of which didn't show anything, or only showed what we already knew. Anyway, most recent was blood in stools for only 2 times and now all fine. I'm nauseous and dizzy -- the dizziness has always been the thyroid up to this point so I am hoping that is it. Trying to get in to see a specialist and they said they want to do an endoscopy and I am totally freaked out so this was very very very helpful. Thank you!

Eve 8

So very happy for you that everything was all right. I beet you are glad it is all over. I wish mine on Friday will be that easy. hOwever, I do not think I am going to be put all the way out. Last time I had the colon scope done I was in that light sleep and was up through the whole thing. The same doctor is doing it so I will not be that lucky.

I amgald for you and now you can be relieved.

Lily

Re: I had my endoscopy today

Eve_8,
Thanks for posting - I hope I can do as well as you did. I'm still dreading next Monday. So you don't remember them putting the camera down your throat? I hope your tests turn out ok and you don't have h pylori.

Re: I had my endoscopy today

Hi Tlily, I actually asked the anesthesiologist about the difference between the colonoscopy and endoscopy as far as sedation was concerned and he said that you are actually given less for the colonoscopy. When you a colonoscopy you are generally awake but calmer. He said that when you get the endoscopy you are "out". (I think technically you are awake, but you do not remember a thing.") As long as you are getting sedation, I bet it will be the same way for you. I wish you the best

Hi Taape, I don't remember the camera, at all. Have you ever had any surgery done? If so, it was just like that. You remember them telling you to count and the next thing you remember is the recovery room. I even got a biopsy and I don't feel any thing. Please try not to worry, I am sure your's will work out the same way. Thanks for your good wishes

Hi b&wcats, Your welcome
