LPR, Need Advice - Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

My mother was recently diagnosed with LPR.

She has tried to follow the diet. And she is on Nexium.
Symptoms have improved. But are definitely not cured.

A friend of hers recently said that she needed to get symptom free; otherwise she is at risk for developing cancer. Has anyone else heard this?

The problem is that the lpr diet is so bland, it is very hard for my mother to follow it perfectly. Does anyone know the prognosis if she does, indeed, follow thediet perfectly? Can one get cured of LPR and then eventually go back to eating at least some fat and a little caffeine? Or is my mother doomed to eating bland for the rest of her life. Has anyone else had this much trouble following the diet and found some great recipes or a way of coping?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm glad she's on Nexium. Is she on Nexium 2x per day (40 mg per pill, total of 80 mg)? If not, this may be the problem. LPR does not respond to 1 dose per day, it requires 2 doses of a PPI (like Nexium) per day. This is standard treatment now in the medical community.

Hi..I am new here..lucky that I found you guys here at this site...can I give you a little bit of my problem? In may i started coughing...thought it was related to hyper- thyroid that I was diagnosed with a year ago..my dr kep saying allergies, post nasal drip..I went and spent a ton of $ for tests..no allergies..finally I decided to go to a gastro, as I thought maybe reflux..started 20 mg aciphex about 7 weeks Ago..i feel sooo much better, but the cough is not totally gone..and sleeping I wake up with stuff choking me, go wedge pillow, better,I get horse and clear my throat..I did not know anything about LPR..where can I get more info.

Also, I turned 50 last year.. and I really feel like there is a connection with hormonal changes.although i have not really started any menopause signs..I feel like when I retain fluid I cough more..and of course my stomach ia little larger than it should be..But I would appreciate any input. I am going back to gastro in a few weeks, and I want to be ready to let him know what I have found out.

there's info on the internet about LPR, just type in LPR diagnosis or symptoms and you will get some information. Keep reading the posts here, many are LPR sufferers.
I can relate to all your symptoms, have had them and then some others as well

as far as being related to menopause, hmm, not sure on that since so many men and young women suffer from this condition, although hormonal changes can sure change chemistry, so who knows! I'm in that bracket myself so have seen some weird things going on with me these past few years, and none of them fun

anyway, hope you can find some relief from your discomfort and welcome to the club.
