What is rebound?

I would like to know what rebound is?
I am going to try and get off of the ppi, I am think about just stop it.
do it make you sick, or what?
is it as bad as the side effects?
side affects on the ppi for me is, stomach cramps, burning stomach, terrible stomach pain, back pain, ribs pain, my legs and arms sometime will have tingling feeling, you name it , my gum will feel bad to , I never had any of those symptoms before I went on the ppi.

Re: What is rebound?

Rebound usually means that the symptoms return which the person was taking the medication for in the first place. I don't know how bad it comes back because I haven't tried to get off of them yet.

Re: What is rebound?

PPIs don't cure the underlying cause of reflux - they only treat the symptoms. They do allow erosions in the esophogous to heal, but when you stop taking the PPIs, the acid will once again get into the esophogous and begin to create new erosions.

So whenever you stop PPIs, you can expect symptoms to return. I think that for some people, the symptoms return more gradually than for others. With LPR, the symptoms come back very fast.

But I wouldn't say that the symptoms come back worse than before - but I wouldn't want to deal with the level of symptoms that I had prior to using the PPIs.

As much as I hate hate hate taking medication every day, I can honestly say that I'd rather live a shorter life due to taking mediation every day so long as I feel good during those days. The way I felt when I wasn't on PPIs was unbearable, and frankly, it destroyed the quality of life in every respect. I don't think I could ever live like that again.

Re: What is rebound?

Birden,

Can you dry a different PPI? Which one are you on? What is your dosage? Maybe we can help you find one that works better for you.

I started taking Nexium in January of this year for one month. Then, when I stopped-the GERD was "gone". I went 5 months doing just fine....then caught a really bad cold...and within weeks the GERD was back. I'm trying it again. Took Nexium this time for 6 weeks....stopped a few days ago. So far, so good. I figure even if I have to keep going back on Nexium, it's better than just staying on it (IF YOU DON'T NEED TO). We'll see how it goes. Maybe with a combination of better diet...I may get more than 5 months! I miss pizza the most
