not able to eat solid foods - Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Hi

I have had acid reflux for a few years along with asthma, allergies and irritable bowel syndrome. I have taken alot of oral and iv prednisone which opens the airways for asthma. My doc thinks that my problems I am having with my stomach are being made worse from all the prednisone. I am having an ultrasound next week and I have an appt with a specialist but not until April 4th. I find in the last few weeks whenever I eat or drink anything I feel worse. I am having constant stomach pain, nausea, pain when swallowing and I am weak and shaky along with losing 15 pounds in the last 3 weeks. I am taking domperidone 10 mg 4 x a day and apo-omeprazole 40 mg 2 x a day. I am taking maalox and gravol but none of these have given me much relief.

Any comments appreciated.

Hi Chrisitine

Prednisone will mostly definitely tear your stomach all to pieces, I know I've took enough of it so I know exactly how you feel. If you can't get your doctor to write you a prescription for Prevacid then get you some Prilosec OTC also try the Wal-Mart brand of liquid antacid. The Equate brand is better than Maalox to me. Another thing you can try but takes longer is try the ginger root herb which is in the vitamin section. But if you can afford it and your doctor will write you a prescription for it which I'm surpised they didn't because a lot of doctors do when they give you Prednisone. I hope this will help you in some way.

Prednisone can cause a build up of yeast in your body. Health stores carry all kinds of products to get rid of yeast. Taking a probiotic is a good idea.

Thank you both for your comments. I have never had reflux and stomach problems this bad before. I will ask the doctor about the medications you mentioned. I did mention to my doctor about probiotics but he did not know much about them. I have alot of allergies so I am always concerned about taking anything I do not know much about.

Try asking your doctor about sucralfate / carafate. It coats the lining of your stomach. It stopped my pain.
