Unhappy Not GERD but similar symptoms... anyone else experience this??

Basically for the past year after I eat (not food specific that I can tell) some food comes back up. Mouthfulls of food really, that come up with a burping. It is not vomiting. There is no wretching. I do not experience pain. My regurgitation is not acidic and can even begin as fast as coming up while I am sitting eating a meal or wait as long as 2 hours to come back up. I have had a bunch of tests all inconclusive, testing anywhere from motility issues to gallbladder issues and nothing. I have been lumped into the grouping of having IBS and I have a hilitial herna, though that is too tiny to cause any of these problems Dr.s say. My Dr's think maybe cyclic vomiting disease or gasteroparesis but I am not a testbook case on either diagnosis. Any ideas??

I know this is a very simple answer but I had similar problems a while ago. I grind my teeth and therefore when I chew my food - it doesn't get ground up enough. If the food is not ground up enough the saliva - first step in digestion and breakdown doesn't complete it's job. When the saliva isn't concentrated into the food enough and it hits the stomach, the stomach can kick it back up. Is there a possibility that you're not chewing your food thoroughly? Perhaps even eating too fast?

Maybe try to really slow down when you are eating and if necessary decrease your portions so you can take your time. Chew every bite thoroughly and slowly. Relax and see if that helps?

Re: Not GERD but similar symptoms... anyone else experience this??

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I have been making an effort to eat even more slowly than I used to, which is pretty comical because I have always been a slow eater. I come from a family of slow eaters I thought the same as you at first, that perhaps I was eating too fast, or not chewing well. I have found that unfortunately that is not an issue. I was on a broth and soft food diet for a while suggested by my doc, but nothing changed. It will still come, but just in a more liquid form. But truly I appreciate your suggestion. It is nice to know that people are out there reading!

I guess it could be gastroparesis, or any kind of refluxing issues. (I have mild gastroparesis, but have NO vomiting-type symptoms; just lots of burping/reflux.)

You said "motility issues" were tested, but does that include the ESOPHAGUS motility? Gastroparesis is a motility issue, but of the stomach.

Also, what if you have too TIGHT a lower esophageal sphincter? Seems some people here (few) have mentioned either having tight LES or talked about it generally. Theoretically your LES would stay shut and not allow things to pass. Thus, you could have heavy reflux (regurgitation) if it can't go anywhere.

Yes, I have read that on some medical medical sites, that some more extreme gasteroparesis indivs will reguirgitate their food. That is why they think I may have some issues with that or cyclic vomiting syndrome (which apparently has many crossovers in symptoms with gasteropareis). The only thing is everything came back normal on my gastric emptying study. I have also had an endoscopy (upper and lower), colonoscopy, CT of Abdomen and Pelvis, Brain MRI, Video Esophogram, and a motility study (the one where they put a catheter down your throat into your stomach to test muscular stregnth and such). All normal, which is why my doc's are unclear what is wrong. Maybe it is gasteroparesis, I have already tried smaller meals, but that too does not always solve the issue. Odd, right?
