Does anyone else feel as though this GERD thing is totally interferring with their lives? I am about to go crazy! In the last couple of years since this has been getting worse I am just not the same person that I was in my past. I worry about what I eat, if it will cause a problem or not and how I will feel. I am a wreck when I start to hurt because who knows if it is my heart or not (been to the cardiologist but I still worry). I get pretty embarressed when I start the burping that sounds like a big burly guy drinking beer in a bar( i am a woman and beer kills me). Sometimes the pain lasts for a little while sometimes for hours or even days! The pain goes into my arms, back, jaw, sinus area and chest, it burns in my stomach and esophogus. The pain in my jaw and face is more like pressure, not real sharp aching, but it is there non the less. My PCP just put me on Prevacid last week and we are waiting to see if that helps, I am going to a new gastro doc on the 30th but will he be able to tell me anything more, this is just about the craziest thing ever. I also have anxiety over this whole thing. And as I have said before, which came first, the anxiety or the GERD???
My husband thinks I am going crazy or something and my kids are just wondering who this wacko is that is saying she is their Mom.
I guess I just needed to know that I am not the only one that is struggleing with this nasty beast!
Thanks for listening!
Crazy--------I am right there with you with every single symptom other than the burning stomache. I am to the point where i am losing weight again cause i am scared to eat anything cause it might cause pain in which i will contribute it to my heart. My jaw, left arm, upper back have hurt off and on for a year. The burning in my throat and esophogus has just recently gotten a ton worse. I am to scared to take any of the medicine they want me to take so i just sit and suffer through it. I know the anxiety that i suffer from EVERY DAY came from one day when the pains in my left arm started and i ended up in the ER with a full blown panic attack later that nite thinking it was definatly a heart attack. I made several more trips there the first few months. I am to the point now where i dont run off to the ER with every pain but it is hard not to. I take ativan on a daily basis usually to get myself through the worry of each pain being my heart. I expect a heart attack everyday and my world and life revolve around the pains and trying to tell myself the doctors have said my heart is fine and all the test show that also. Now the problem is believing in the doctors and the test. I truely feel for you cause i go through this everyday and its totally wearing me out. I am in therapy for anxiety but it doesnt help, my kids think im nuts and sometimes i wonder if i really am and if i will ever feel like a normal person like i use to. If you ever want to talk im here, i know it is a gift to find someone that understands how i feel.
I totally relate to what you're saying. I'm 12 weeks post-op from having my gallbladder removed and I am experiencing all of the same symptoms. I've had every test imaginable and still my gastro doctor has not been able to give me a dx of gerd or acid reflux. I've come to realize that my gallbladder was not the problem since I still have the same symptoms. My anxiety level has been climbing because nothing seems to be working for me. I've tried Nexium and that didn't work for me. I am now trying prevacid. Its only day 2 but nonetheless, no relief. I also have needed to take ativan, especially when the chest pain starts. I also had my heart checked out, its fine. My gastro doctor has asked me if I am under a lot of stress. It makes me laugh because I think, he thinks, I am doing this to myself. Crazy. Is it possible to have gerd/acid reflux without it showing up on scans, endoscopy. or GI?
I wake up every day wondering when I can get back to my life, the one without gerd/acid reflux................................
well, according to my tests too, I don't have acid reflux. So what is this burning pain all about then? guess you are wondering that also.......maybe we are crazy afterall - heck, its as good a theory as any, right? (I'm being sarcastic.) hang in there - someday the nightmare will end. our bodies are smart and they don't like the pain anymore than we do so they will figure out a way to be free of it. Just keep affirming that.
Can I jump on the bandwagon.... I can't even get a job because I am afraid that I will have a panic attack at work. The LPR has been so bad for me, my breathing is labored from teh feeling of my throat being tight and my throat burns and I constantly belch!
My poor husband, I almost feel worse for him ... he has to hear me everyday say how I have tight throat and can't do anything
The past 6 months have been HELL!
what's really scary is that most people are stating that their symptoms are on-going for months!!! I've had indigestion with severe burping since september. I was happy to have my gallbladder removed because I thought that would put an end to it. I've never had any digestive problems before.
The only connection that I can make it that I was dieting and lost 20 lbs and
I began suffering with indigestion. I read on another thread that gerd/acid reflux can occur after gallbladder surgery. Of course my gastro doctor says it isn't so. Made to feel crazy again!!!
I have left arm pain (at the elbow) my GP says its "tennis elbow." That symptom also came out of nowhere. I wake up every day with a lower back ache and lots of mucus in my throat (sorry.) I spend the better part of the day burping to relieve the pressure in my chest. Sometimes it makes me gag, and I vomit this white foamy stuff. Doesn't that sound like reflux/gerd to you? I'm scanning the internet and this healthboard trying to figure out what is going on since I can't get an
answer from my gastro doctor. I tried the apple cider vinegear today. It has helped with the burping a little. I'm really feeling sad that I can't participate in my life the way I want to. I just want to find some relief from these horrible symptoms!
I also burp up this white foamy stuff.... all tests by the GI say I don't have bad reflux or acid....so what the deal.
I had my gallbladder out as well and really feel my digestion got so much worse after.
Oh my gosh Crazy, I have exactly what you wrote! I'm so releaved I'm not the only one.
I have felt like this for a year and a half now. I wake up everyday thinking is this the day I have a heart attack? I have had all the heart tests and my cardio says I'm fine. But how do you convince yourself of that if you have chest, jaw, arm, etc pain all the time. Donna I have the elbow pain. I feel like I'm gonna lose it everyday. I know my husband thinks I'm going crazy. I'm scared to be alone even. If my family is gone and I'm home alone I panic.
I have tried all the PPI's available, but they seem to make the GERD worse!
Like you Confused I have been to the ER. They couldn't find anything wrong with me.
My symptoms seem to be worse in the morning, especially nausea. After lunch it seems to calm down somewhat.
Thank you everyone for sharing. I do feel a little better knowing I'm not alone.
I sure wish I could have an answer to help everyone.
Hi Girls! Do any of you notice that you have been bending over alot when one of these attacks happens? I had a pretty good day yesterday, and this morning I woke up took my prevacid and then proceeded to clean out my freezer before breakfast. I was bending at the stomach area quite a bit and lo and behold the whole burping, chest pressure thing started up. It really scared me until I decided to try and recreate it by bending over 5 or 6 times and it started again...
Not sure, what do you think!!
It is just a theory..
alex - How long ago did you have your gallbladder out? Did you have your gallbladder removed because of stones? Has your gastro doctor indicated that your symptoms may be a result of having your gallbladder removed?
All of this is so frustrating. I tried the Bragg's apple cider vinegar yesterday and I really think it helped the burping. It did not help the burning backache.
laurietrib - I also worry that my heart is really the problem. I just turned 50 and of course when you read about women and heart health, I seem to have all the warning signs of a heart attack. I've make serveral trips to the ER and saw a cardiologist. All say my heart is fine. I still panic because I don't have any answers and the PPI do not work for me. It makes me wonder if the PPI are not working for me, does that mean I don't have gerd/acid reflux?
Of course, I'm left to think its my heart..... When I really panic, I take a 1/4 tab of the smallest dose of ativan and it really helps. I do worry about being home alone. I worry about my kids, ages 11 and 17 coming home and finding me in a horrible situation. I'm scheduled to see my gastro doctor next week. I am going to ask him to read this thread. Try the apple cider vinegar. I take
2 tsps in the morning. It might help.
I decided to stop taking the PPI. I was taking Nexium for over a month. Did nothing. In fact, I think it may the chest pressure worse. I decided to stop taking the prevacid, even though I only took it for a few days. It also made me feel weird and didn't relieve any symptoms. I'm now trying the apple cider vinegar. To be honest, it someone told me to stand on my head, I'd try that too. I just so sick of it.
crazylife414. You're not alone. My friend's reflux is also triggered by bending.
Not mine. My biggest complaints are the chest pressure, burning backache and elbow pain which seem to stay with me throughout the day.
Does anyone have any ideas about how long a bout of gerd/acid reflux can last? Does it ever go away on its own?
Donna, I hope you get an answer from your doctor. PPI's dont work for me either. I feel like the doctors think I'm crazy. Maybe it is me, I don't know.
Last time I was at the doctors he told me to try probiotics. The ones you buy from the health food store that are refridgerated. I haven't yet because every new medicine I add makes my GERD worse. I also have restless leg and started taking Requip. By day 5, I was close to going to the ER.
bethseba, I quit the PPI's because like any other medication it did make my symptoms worse. I only take meds (2) for high blood pressure.
crazy, I do think bending over alot will make GERD worse. I tried doing sit ups with an exercise program. That was a big mistake. I do find that walking seems to help.
Today seems to be a good day. I do notice that if I go 4-5 hours without eating, my chest starts to hurt. When I eat something that doesn't interfer with the GERD I do seem to feel better.

Without even knowing what your bp medication is, I would almost guarantee that your bp meds are causing your problems....as the queen of bp side effects, I can tell you from experience that a minimum dose of hydrocholorothizide caused periodic liimb movements (in addition to leg movements, other limbs and body parts move as well) that were so severe I would wake up in the middle of the night with hip pain; a minimum dose of benicar/hct caused daily restless leg that started in the afternoon and lasted until I took my dose of benicar/hct the next am. BOTH my sleep specialist and my gp denied any correlation between the bp med and the rls, but my rls disappeared almost immediately after I stopped taking the bp med (at my insistence) and hasn't returned. Oh, and the mirapex that was prescribed for my rls, did nothing to ease the symptoms!
I haven't read your previous posts and I am presently too tired to do so at this time, but I will tell you that my gerd disappeared after being treated for sleep apnea 3 years ago--I was on ppis off and on for over 20 years. I did experience heart burn for the first time in the last couple of weeks only to have a blood pressure "poster" inform me that the bp med I'm taking caused her heartburn. I'm now taking that med with oatmeal and thus far have had no problems. But again, some of the bp meds list heartburn as a side effect so unless you get rid of the bp med, you may be living with the heartburn.
Laurie..I do think that the bending does play a role in the GERD symptoms, how much I don't know, but I do believe it can be a problem. I am a little overweight, so I think that the 2 things combined are probably not too good!
I did something really stupid! I was feeling pretty good, and then ate 2 chocolate chip cookies, after about 1 and a half hours, you would think that I swallowed fire, pain in my upper chest and throat and in my upper back. OH and of course, don't forget the burping. I had felt pretty good yesterday and even part of today until this happened. I just don't get it! Some food that should bother me doesn't, and then other stuff that doesn't phase anyone else kills me!
I know it was the butter and chocolate in the cookies.....For years chocolate was such my comfort food, now it is my nightmare food!
Bethsheba, I had my GERD long before I started on my blood pressure meds and actually have felt better since taking the Prevacid. I don't plan on being on it for long if at all possible, medication scares me silly! I was on Nexium and Zantac and really did not notice much difference, but the Prevacid has been somewhat helpful, I have been taking it for 8 days now.
Anyway, this is just a crazy nightmare! Of course, the more upset I get, and the more anxiety that sets in, the worse my stomach gets so it is just a viscous circle.
At least we have each other
