Sorry another question

My doctor recently increased my protonix dosage from one pill a day to two pills a day. My question is how long does it take to feel a difference. Right now I am having a constant burning sensation in the lower part of my esophagus, and have been belching alot, which makes the burning worse. Can anyone help me?

I have also had my dose increased to two a day. I still belch, but it is holding slightly better than before.
I still think (or hope) surgery will eventually fix my problems In the meantime, I think pantoprazole (they market it as somac here) is a lot more effective than Nexium. It seems to have fewer side effects too.
I will be very interested to read about your progress. I have been on the double dose of pantoprazole for only 1 week.

Re: Sorry another question

Did you also have the burning? And how long did it take for you to feel better?

Re: Sorry another question

I am well today, but not confident everything is going to stay that way. I think it is a reasonable strategy to (1) stick to the gerd diet for 6 months; (2) take a double PPI for 3 to 6 months; and (3) if there is no overall improvement after 6 months, investigate both the acid levels with a ph study and the efficiency of the lower esophigael sphincter muscle. Also try to reduce your anxiety (if you can). I usually just sit very still after an acid breakthrough (often in the dark) and reassure myself that few people even with Barret's Esophagitis get cancer from this most horribe illness.

In saying all that, I still believe surgery is a very definite possibility for me.

And on your specific question, I think I am getting some relief from the new PPI already.

I think you have a good attitude. This is a HORRIBLE illness, but the symptoms alone cause enough stress without worrying too much about cancer. Heart disease is still the greater risk for all of us, and too much stress isn't good for the heart.
