Need Help....What Do I Eat At Work??!!

Lately, (2 years now), I've been choking on my food. I've always been a slow eating, however, after choking numerous time in a row, I've become an even slower eater.

I feel like at time, that my tongue sort of "pushes" unchewed food down my throart, forcing me to swollow that. This leads to choking.

I have come to avoid steak all together, and pretty much anything of that nature.

Now, at work, its very stressful - I don't have a break and I'm always working. It's a family owned retail shop (answering phones, helping customers etc.) I don't have a break to eat, and me being such a slow eater, I am also not given the time to eat.

As a result, I'm sticking to mush food and types that don't require much chewing and allowing me to fill my stomach and eat quick...but, I feel I am not eating healthy

I stick to mash potato, cheeseburger, peanut butter sandwhich, sometimes apple sauce, maybe pizza, and stuff like this. Meatballs on occassion.

Any advice on finding what to eat, something soft and not so chewable, that I can manage to eat quick, and have it be healthy? Even a sandwhich takes a while!!

This problem came about suddenly, and it has just invaded my way of life. I've lost some weight, but not much. I just need to feel safe to eat again...I feel I'm going nuts here

Re: Need Help....What Do I Eat At Work??!!

CandP, I'm sorry this is happening to you. At this point, it may be best to visit a GI. Your dysphagia can be caused by several things, Barrett's Esophagus, Achalasia, etc..., but the only one who can determine what is going on in you throat would be a doctor. As severe as your symptoms sound, you may forego the G.P. at this point and visit a specialist, but your G.P. may know your health history and be able to determine treatment and follow-ups. (I was told by a doctor friend once that I needed to see a certain type of specialist ASAP. My G.P. had not completed the referral. I tried to schedule an appointment and the specialist would not schedule one until the referral was complete.)

I hope you can get some relief. Please keep us posted.

Re: Need Help....What Do I Eat At Work??!!

Thanks for the help. I made an appt with my GP for next week. Everyone is telling me it's really anxiety and that its all in my head. But I've always been a slow eater. When I rush it, I know I'll choke on the food for sure.

Is this curable? Or do I need to see a speech pathologist for the rest of my life? I hear that this happens to everybody once in a while. The fact that I've had a trauma from this by choking, is that what is causing this to become a phobia - is this true?

Glad you are going to a doctor this week...but in the meantime, try eating yogurt, soup, cottage cheese for lunch...easy to swallow and good for you too..

If it's achalasia there's not a cure. However there are some surgery options which can make things better for you.
