Symptoms of acid reflux?

Hello,

I have developed shortness of breath over the last few months. It gets progressively worse with the worst episode to date happening yesterday.

I have known all this time that my SOB is somehow tied to my stomach. This is because whenever I start experiencing it, I also get a funny feeling in my stomach and nausea follows immediately. It seems that no matter what I do, I cannot take a breath deep enough to meet my body's need for oxygen.
When I do breathe in and out while short of breath, my stomach hurts or simply feels weird. My lungs also hurt from trying too hard to suck in the air. I have had nasal congestion for about as long as the breathlessness. It just appeared one day and has never left.

My breathing problems make everyday activities difficult for me. Any exertion brings on the SOB. I have been off work for 6 months now due to my medical issues stemming from having severe hypertension.

This is my problem:

I have been on beta blockers for six months. They are notorious for contributing to the shortness of breath - a direct result of their effecting the heartbeat by slowing it down. I did not have any breathing problems during the first few months of being on this drug. My dose has never changed. I am on other drugs as well, mostly for blood pressure. My doctor is convinced that the beta blockers are the cause of my problems. I blame the drugs I am on for my nausea and nasal congestion. The stomach issue has gone unexplained and ignored by the doc.
Reading through a few of the posts on this board, I realized that there were other possibilities I had not even thought of that might relate to the stomach and breathlessness connection.

My questions:

Are there certain symptoms I'd have to be showing to have any of the conditions discussed on this board?

Are my symptoms indicative of any (possible) specific health issues?

What are the most common symptoms of acid reflux?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Flowergirl

Your symptoms sound a lot like LPR to me.... Unfortunatley I have not had any relief from the SOB and the throat tightness. This has been a nightmare for me.

Are my symptoms indicative of any (possible) specific health issues?

Of course I would suggest an endoscpy to rule out tumors and what not but I would doubt it.

What are the most common symptoms of acid reflux?

It's different for everyone... I never had heartburn and typical symptoms just woke up one day with shortness of breath, and like you felt like my lungs hurt and chest hurting from breathing so hard. I went to the hospital of course because I was nervous that I was having a asthma attack or something. They did a heart work up and checked my lungs all came out ok. I went and saw an ENT who diagnosed LPR, since then I have been to at least 10 different doctors, had multiple GI tests and been on every med. an d still have the SOB. It usually starts after I drink or eat something in the morning and continues for the rest of the day.
I take Aciphex, Mylanta and Zyrtec right now.

Anyway, I hope this help you a bit, at least you know your not alone

Take Care
Alex

Re: Symptoms of acid reflux?

Hello,

your informative post is much appreciated. I am surprised to learn that in some cases there's not much that the doctors can do to alleviate the breathlessness and other symptoms. I am well aware that some never arrive at a diagnoses.

Like you, I have several specialists and they don't seem to work together at all. Each looks after his own specialty without really looking at me as a whole or comparing notes with the others. That could be the reason my kidney condition is still not diagnosed six months later. I had all the cardio stuff done and was told by my cardiologist that my heart or the beta blockers should not be causing the SOB. Well, something is.

The thought that things might stay the way they are scares me. I know it is a real possibility - it has happened to you! I have not had any pulmonary tests done (yet) as my GP is convinced the beta blockers are responsible and is considering a referral to a pulmonologist as a last resort.

Thank you for your suggestions and for sharing your experiences. You would not believe how much it helps.

Hi flowergirl2day,
I have the shoetness of breath for 11 months and i am blood pressure meds. When this first started they thought it was my meds, so they switched them. I am now of beta blockers for 10 months and on another blood pressure med, but i still can't breath. I think the docters want to blame it on the meds becaude they them selfs are not sure.

Re: Symptoms of acid reflux?

I think you both hit the nail on the head. First off flowergirl: You are so right by saying the doctors do not look at the entire picture... they do not correspond with the other doctors in other fields and therefor you are left with a million different diagnosis'.
And as Chalupa said they almost feel as if "well it's not life threatening" so we could blame it on something else like the medicines, or better yet, it's all in your head! If I had a dome for every doctor that tolm me it was anxiety I would be rich!
I always have to preface my visit with "This is not anxiety....... I feel like my throat is closing and ttight and I cannot get a full breath in...again it is not anxiety!" haha
Of course this feeling is giving me anxiety, I think anyone who feels as thought hey cannot breathe gets anxiety! haha Its really frustrating!
Good Luck and if you find the magic cure please dont forget us!

Hello Chalupa!

Thank you for your reply.

I think the docters want to blame it on the meds becaude they them selfs are not sure.[/QUOTE]

You are absolutely right! This is the easiest way out for them! Yeah, right, blame it on the meds! There are dozens of conditions that could be causing our shortness of breath.
How sick do we have to get before they really start paying attention? I was told by my doctor that he had hoped it would go away!

It hasn't! It is not acceptable that we should be left to deal with it on our own as best we can and adjust our lives and lifestyles accordingly! (meaning not being able to do half the stuff we used to do and love to do, or enjoy many activities, even basic ones, such as gardening!)

I think it would help if our doctors experienced shortness of breath themselves. They would be more understanding, helpful and compassionate.

Wink Re: Symptoms of acid reflux?

Recently I was diagnosed with a large hiatal hernia and erosions of the esphagus. I'm wondering if anyone out there has had surgery for this, and if it helped? One doctor told me it would stop the GERD, but leave me with bloating and gas problems? Has anyone had a hiatal hernia repaired and NOT had problems after ?

Re: Symptoms of acid reflux?

I've had a hiatal (sliding type) & acid reflux for at least 38 yrs. Back in the 70', there wasn't much info about these conditions. So it was observe & experiment. At first I used some of the few products on the market until one day, I gagged on Mylanta (I think). I decided I was going to learn how to manage this situation. Fat was a big factor I found even though I limited my intake because of calories. I went through my list of favorite foods & eliminated the ones that caused the most problems. I switched to a vegetarian (lacto/ova) diet which helped a lot since meat stimulates acid production which is needed meat digestion. Then I turned my meals upside down. I ate like a Queen at breaksfast, a Princess at lunch, & a pauper at supper. At supper, I eat easily digested food so that there isn't much in my stomach by bedtime. For me that is 2 glasses of milk & maybe a salad & a slice of cheese. Eating out is usually out of the question so I just have a glass of water & enjoy the conversation. I take my food everywhere even on a cross country trip. It sure beats being up all night with pain etc. Then I found out that when I slept on my left side, my acid reflux was better. Now that is common knowledge. Wearing restrictive clothing is another No No so my clothes have changed. Since I had a sliding hiatal hernia, my stomach goes part way up in the chest & does cause SOB at times. This happens mostly when I have eaten too much. So many lifestyle issues to consider, but it is worth it. I chose not to have surgery or take meds for the condition because of the risks. If you bend over, do you feel acid/food coming up your throat(esophagus)? Apparently, some people have silent GERD. An X-Ray (Barium Swallow) would show a hiatal hernia (that's what I had). You probably need to see a GI Doc to rule out Acid Reflux.

Fam,

Many thanks for your very detailed and informative post! Boy, do I have a lot to learn!

.

This I can do quite easily and will try for sure! Whether or not my problems arise from GERD or similar condition does not matter so much. I usually have fruit, nuts and later on oatmeal with flaxseed, cinnamon, cranberries etc. for breakfast. It sounds like a lot but I eat it over 4-5 hours. I have cut back on the meat A LOT months ago because of my cholesterol issues and diets (low salt low fat). Same with the deep fried foods. If I have something I shouldn't I walk an extra half an hour or so and promise to myself to never do it again ( I use olive oil only for salads and such. No butter, no margarine.

I often have a glass of milk with a chunk of freshly baked bread. (Store-bought). My husband's thing - he only eats fresh bread and won't touch it the second day. He is a diabetic so we've been eating lots of veggies and fruit for years (no sugary foods). Do you cook special foods for yourself? Why must you take food with you when travelling? You can get a plain salad anywhere!

I am surprised to hear that! Looks like you and I have had to deal with a bunch of medical issues (one or two would have been enough!). Fam, while walking tonight, I had to stop and consider heading back after only 10 minutes. My stomach felt soooo heavy and my breathing was worse than usual and it was hot outside. I walked only with great discomfort and apprehension. I was too afraid to do my usual route (which takes me partly through unpopulated wooded area). I ended up just going around in a circle through a few streets instead.
(I ate a little bit of stew for dinner - two bites of meat, rest veggies). Not a big or heavy meal. I am starting to feel scared about this whole thing. The SOB should be getting better- I have not taken Diovan since my last allergic reaction to it, and my dose of beta blockers is lower now (if THAT'S what's causing my SOB).
I don't know how to begin explaining any of this to my doctor with him sneaking a look at his wristwatch now and then. There will not be time for any of that because we have to deal with my drug allergy.

I have what feels like a burning sensation there all the time. Considering all the side effects of my meds, it could be just another one I figure. Or from the breathing. At least it does not hurt.
When I bend over, I feel my breathing speed up. I don't taste any acid.

Re: Symptoms of acid reflux?

Hi flowergilrl,
I only tasted the acid many months after beeing on the ppi's and only when i cough. I now think the ppi's are actually worse than better. I feel but i could be wrong that the ppi's shut down all acid and our bodies need , and some acid to digestest our food. This is why we feel this way after the ppi's. I am not sure if the shortness of breath now is all reflux because mine is now 11 months and i have been on every med there is for reflux and even doube doses. When i took the double doses i felt worse. Now i am taking prilosec otc everyother day, and pepcid complete on the other day. Still no change.

Chalupa,

how sad you have not been able to find any relief! You would think that there must be something that will help to treat your condition! I am sure there is! The most important thing is to get a correct diagnoses. Once you have that, steps can be taken toward proper treatment.

Have other conditions resulting in similar symptoms been considered or investigated by your physician? In my experience, some doctors stick with their initial "diagnosis" instead of admitting they may have been wrong. This even when certain factors come to light through time that were not present initially, and DON"t quite fit the established pattern.

The fact that none of the drugs to date have helped could mean that they are not the right ones for treating your condition! (Read: the condition they are designed to treat may NOT be what you have!)..Just a thought.

hI FLOWERGIRL,
i HAVE EVRY TEST DONE FROM HEART-LUNGS ETC. Everything is fine. In my last endoscopy they found alittle reflux and small haital hernia and gastritis, and they think i may have ceiacs. I have been on a gluten free diet for 2 weeks and still no difference . My regular doc doesn't think i have celiacs because the blood tests where very low for celiacs. They now want me to try elavil 10mg for ibs. They think that maybe my stomach is pushing up on my diaphram and causing all this. I feel like a rat that they are just trying things on.

Alex12...I have been doing the Acephix 20 mg for acid reflux because of my shortness of breath (feels like someone pushing on my thorax). Take deep breaths but don't get satisfied. Read that anxiety CAN cause dyspnea and today I have tried Xanax .5 mg to see what it might do. Hell anything is worth a try. When you can't breath....nothing matters. Do you know anyone that has tried any other things. I am also open to suggestions. If that Xanax work, I wil let all of you know. It could be a combination of both those things.
