Does this sound like acid reflux or something else?

My fiance, as long as I've known him, has told me he has acid reflux. He hasn't had a scope down there or anything, but has been on Acifex for the past year or so.

Basically, it used to be that after he ate, especially if he ate a lot, he would have this hacking cough after. He said it felt like something caught in his throat. Sometimes it would be mild, sometimes it would be so bad he would throw up from it. Usually it was tied, like i say, with him eating a lot or eating something harsh like mexican or italian food.

Lately, the problem has been more in the morning. He'll wake up and as soon as he sits up, he starts with this cough that is basically like a dry heave. This gets worse and worse then often times he will cough what looks like phlegm (a lot of it though) up into his mouth (sorry to be graphic), usually after this happens it subsides.

I've read up on acid reflux and I understand that he shouldn't be eating a lot of things and all that. But, it seems like after an entire night's sleep, the food should be digested--so how can acid reflux be causing this?

does this sound like an average case of acid reflux, or something else? He's on the acifex (i think this is a generic nexium, but not sure), but should it be making these symptoms go away?

Re: Does this sound like acid reflux or something else?

It could very well be acid reflux if post nasal drip has been ruled out. My husband has pretty much what your fiance is experiencing but he also has allergy related PND to make it worse. The hubby is on 2 Nexium and 2 Axid with symptoms but his throat, via endoscope, looks healed. Eventhough the symptoms are present they are no where near as bad as they were.

You all need to make sure this is the best course of action for the fiance. His symptoms may improve with a different PPI, adding a H2 Blocker, or increasing the strength of what he is taking. Given he has had these symptoms for so long it is in his best interest to have a scope done to check for damage. There is an asthma link to GERD as well, so the cough could be affecting the lungs.

He may also have LPR. This is a type of reflux but its effects are different. ****** symptoms of LPR (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux) as that could also be a possibility. The symptoms are MUCH harder to control and are not as quick to react to PPI therapy.
