why are you only supposed to take Prilosec for 14 days?

I started taking Prilosec 20mg. Just wandering why the directions say only take for 14 days and not to take it again for like 4 months. The doctor gave my husband Prilosec and he is to take one every day and not just for 14 days. I just bought mine without seeing a doctor and it seems to be helping but I am wondering how I will feel after having to stop taking it after the 14 days are up! If I get the acid reflux real bad again after the Prilosec should I just take something different like Tagamet, etc.? Just wandering.

I have been on Prilosec for 8 years. Ssometimes I have to take 1 twice daily when my tummy kicks up. Also my Dr tells me it's OK to add Pepcid AC 20mg to the mix as needed. Prilosec is very safe. I have been told I will be on it forever....

I think they tell you that because its sold otc and you are getting it without a doctor... once you go to a doctor and get it there is no time limit.

Re: why are you only supposed to take Prilosec for 14 days?

Thanks for the information because I was worried about my acid reflux returning after taking Prilosec for the initial 14 days. I plan on mentioning my acid reflux to the doctor but I just haven't had the time to make an appointment! But I plan to and I just needed immediate relief without waiting to go to the doctor!
