| Re: acid reflux and hypoglycemic symptoms
Yes, I get those symptoms. I've had reflux off and on for years. and I have had episodes when I've felt an extreme tiredness, not sleepy, more like totally drained and weak, and then I get shaky and cold sweats and lightheaded, to the extent that I just have to lie down. Each time it happens it scares me silly, but almost without fail, eventually I will have a bout of burping or feel trapped air being released. Sometimes the weakness lasts 10 minutes, but it can last up to 2 hours, before I feel the air coming up. Immediately after the wind is released, I have my energy back, just like that.
At other times I just get palpitations and it is always connected to my digestion and wind.
And every single time it happens, I wonder why I was worried. But next time, I'm scared silly again, and I think I'm dying, until the burps or hiccups start.
I've asked doctors and specialists about it, and they all say there is no cconnection between heart palps and the weakness and digestion, but for me it is always together. I kept saying, I am sure the trapped wind is pressing on my heart or something.
Then I found out about the vagus nerve on the internet and asked another doctor about it, and he agreed totally with me, that wind trapped in the esophagus or stomach, or acid, can all trigger episodes in the vagus nerve (sorry I'm not very scientific here). In the past few years there is a heap of info on the internet about it, and how reflux can affect the vagus nerve.
I don't know if what I get is actually real hypoglycemia or not, but it has similar symptoms. Another thing that brings it on for me is if I eat anything with aspartame or MSG . 15 minutes after that and I feel like I am going to just fade out completely.
It's rather strange, because I can get severe episodes of reflux, and not have any of the above. Other times I get the jittery stuff happening, and just mild reflux.
I actually had an argument with a cardiologist once. I'd been to see him for heart palpitations. They were the real thing, showed up on my ecg. and they always happen after I've eaten, and always go after a burp. He said there was absolutely no way there could be a connection, and that he was a heart specialist so he ought to know. He wasn't too impressed when I said, Sorry, but it's me that's having them so I think I ought to know too. I've always felt a bit guilty about that, until I've read so much since where doctors are accepting that there IS a connection.
I am going through the worst reflux episode I've ever had the past weeks, and each time I stand up, I get a racing heart and short of breath, until I feel the wind released.
Sorry for the long post, but thought it might relate to what you are experiencing.
