Spasms, Receipe, etc.

Hello,
I've been reading alot of the Acid Reflux Threads and have some questions that I hope to get some feedback from you all. I'm a 38 year old female who has a Hital Hernia. Last year I was rushed to the ER with what I thought was a Heart Attack. Needless to say, I've had all kinds of testing done. Heart checked out fine. Had Endoscopy, Upper Barium Series, Colonsopy, Bone Scan and everything has come back normal with the exception of having Savory Miller Grade 1 Refux. Needless to say I was placed on Nexium. I have been taking Nexium for about a year now and I am still having the following symptons: burning on right side underneath rib area, spasms that shoot up into my chest area (which really scares me). My GI doc. indicates that my Hital Hernia is weaking my LES (lower esophogus spincther) and that is causing my stomach acid to go into my esophogus, which is causing these spasms. He now has me on Nexium twice a day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). This has helped with the burning in my stomach, but the acid is still coming up into my esophogus. I would like to try this ACV (Apple Cidar Vingar) remedy that everyone is discussing, but I am confused because I'm not familiar with some of the words, etc. that you folks are referring too. I went and bought the regular Apple Cidar Vingar at the grocery store, but I am not sure if I picked up the right stuff. Some of you have indicated the "Mother" brand. Please explain to me what this means?
This is an awful feeling that I do not wish to live with and I do not want to be on Nexium for the rest of my life. I would really appreciate any suggestions, etc.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this! I'm not sure exactly what "Mother" means when it refers to apple cider vinegar, but I don't think you can get it at the grocery. I have seen it in several health food stores, so try looking for it there. It will actually say "Mother" or "From the Mother" or some such thing on it, probably in a prominent location.

I had pretty severe symptoms, but didn't start to feel better until I added Pepcid 2 times each day to my twice daily Nexium. Have you tried that?

Re: Spasms, Receipe, etc.

Biscuit7,

The spasms as well as cramping are probably caused by a lack of magnesium in your diet?

Reducing the acid in your stomach also reduces your ability to absorb many minerals from food.
A research article published in the JAMA in December, 2006 says using PPIs for long periods -- a year or more will increase your chances of a hip fracture by 50%! So make sure you get regular Bone Density tests to make sure your bones are not demineralizing.

My wife has been taking Prilosec --20mgm daily for 10 years and gets her test done every year --- to date she has no problems.

Nexeium is also very similar-- both were developed by AstraZentica but 40 mgm - twice daily is 300% more than my wife takes.

I have controlled Acid in my stomach by eating a blander more alkaline diet. I don't
take PPIs--

I wish you well ---Harry

Re: Spasms, Receipe, etc.

Thanks for your reply!!! I haven't thought about taking anything else besides Nexium right now. I'm giving the Nexium 2x a day a try for at least a month to see if that's going to help. If not then it's back to the doctor.
I don't want to continue to be on Nexium period, because I'm not sure of the side effects, but I also know that my espoghus needs to heal, so I don't want to just quit without consulting with my doctor right now.
