Re: Medication for Acid Reflux
I was just diagnosed with a sliding hiatal hernia and an acid reflux. I had horrible problems breathing, my number one complaint for months, compounded by my medications, which included (still do) the beta blockers.
To make a long story short, I suspected a hernia as I was able to see and feel a hard lump there most of the time. I had very little acid backing up though.
I am currently on Nexium for 3 months minimum. I was told to use one of the over the counter antacids before any exertion to help with the breathing. I forget which one. Anyway, scrap that as I am going back to work after 10 months and I won't be taking excessive amounts of antacids indefinitely just to be able to breathe. I'll have to find a way to function without it. I have had no notable side-effects on Nexium. I can breathe so much better already.
My hiatal hernia has been painless for the most part. I suspect I've had it since my first pregnancy, as I had such a big baby. If anything, I get pains in the stomach area. Like someone hit me there with a sledgehammer. Usually after I go to bed. Whether or not I ate anything. All I take is some pills at bedtime, so maybe that's what sometimes causes it. I don't know. I have an insomnia from the meds anyway. I felt an immediate improvement after starting the Nexium. Rightaway. Nausea gone for the most part, and my breathing improved.
