Hi there,

I've been browsing these message boards for a while looking up the personal experiences of others who have undergone this procedure. To be honest, I'm terrified and have no idea what to expect!!! It is also apparent from these boards that those in the US seem to be kept way more informed by their doctors than I seem to have been by my own doc here in the UK. Following endoscopy and manometry/ph testing, I saw my consultant and was told I'd be put on the NHS waiting list for Nissen Fundoplication (no explanations of the procedure/benefits/complications given) and ushered out of the consultation room (the whole appointment lastest all of 5 minutes) and that was the last I heard (six months ago) until I received my appointment the other day. Surgery has been scheduled for 29 November.

I've done lots of research and now know what the procedure involves. The bad thing is my partner, who is also a doctor (albeit not specialising in Gastroenterology) is advising me that this is a major op and I should really only consider it as a last resort.

Can anyone tell me their opinion on "last resort"??? I am currently taking Nexium, and topping up during the day with Gaviscon liquid. The Nexium doesn't completely negate the symptoms (heartburn, regurgitation of solid and liquid foods, the spasms, chest tightness and that constant lump in my throat) but I definitely know about it if I miss even a single dose - as I found out recently when I realised on a weekend that I had failed to reorder my prescription from my GP.

A bit of a long thread I know - but I really want to go into this with my eyes wide open, and believe that the best advice will come from those who have been through this whole ordeal.
