Nexium - Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

I have only been on Nexium for about two weeks, but I feel there are days when I have more LPR symptoms than I ever had before.. I don't know if this is possible or if my LPR just has gotten that bad...
I also wonder how long you take a PPI before you know it isn't going to be the one that works and you need to switch? Thanks

From my experience,

-Started on 40mg Nexium / day for about 5-6 months.

-Then 40mg Nexium & 150 Zantac / day for 4-5 months.

-Then 80mg (2/day) Nexium & 150 Zantac / day for 3-4 months.

-Then 80mg (2/day) Nexium & 150 Zantac / day & carafate 4 times a day since November.

After this, we'll see.

New comers to GERD/LPR often overlook the fact that if there is damage to the tissues in question, the damage has most likely taken place over many many months, maybe even years. So taking Nexium(or whatever drug) is not going to fix the problem overnight. Healing is going to take a long time. In my case, I may have to be on meds for the rest of my life. Because of over-sensitivity to the tissues from being damaged? I don't know....

Hi Katscr,

I am in your same boat - I started on Prilosec OTC for 'suspected' acid, GERD, and hiatal hernia - and every since I took it (tried it for 20 days) - I have felt WORSE than I EVER did BEFORE I went on it

I feel ALL my symptoms so much worse NOW and have so many new ones -- all since taking the Prilosec.

Now I have Prevacid that I am supposed to try instead and am scared it will only get worse - don't think that I could TAKE that.....

Nexium did nothing for me. Neither did Zantac or Protonix.

Seems to be a very stubborn thing to treat.

When I look back now, I realize I have cleared my throat for years... It wasn't painful, didn't hurt so I paid no attention.--thought it was sinuses. I actually happened to be at the ENT for another problem and cleared my throat.. He told me I had acid reflux and I told him he was crazy.. He looked up my nose and throat with some little camera thing and said your voicebox is red and irritated.. He prescribed NExium then and of course I didn't take it because it didn't bother me and I wasn't too sure he was correct.. Long story, he was right.. I should have treated my LPR at least three years ago but just started treating it... I'm sure I have longstanding damage to my esophagus.. I am sure this will take some time to
get better, but it's very strange that now on Nexium I have a lump in my throat, indigestion, I feel like acid is sitting right at the bottom of my throat waiting to shoot up, sore throat.. I only had throat clearning before--that was about it. I ate anything I wanted, drank anything I wanted. Now I truly feel like I have GERD/LPR.. This sucks
