White patches in throat?

I have these white patches next to my tonsils on the back of my
throat. It looks like all the blood has drained out of the skin
or it looks bleached. There's no swelling but the area around it
frequently looks irritated. These came with the onset of my LPRD
and I always presumed the whiteness was a form of acid irritation
(leukoedema or something like that) but my doctor said he's never
seen something like that before. Anyone else have whitened patches
of skin in the back of their throat as a result of reflux?

Mark.

Re: White patches in throat?

Mark,

you should have these white skin patches investigated further. I hope your doctor took a swab and sent it to the lab for analysis. If he does not know what's going on, perhaps you should ask for a referral to someone who might be able to figure it out. Don't just let it slide because your doctor can't help you with this. He should be curious and try to get to the bottom of it.
Good luck!

When my kids were little, they used to get tonsillitis and strep frequently. Sometimes they would have white patches in their throat. That's the only thing I've ever known to cause it but I am not a dr! I would get another opinion if it doesn't clear up.

Re: White patches in throat?

My doctor had a throat culture done and it was negative for strep, etc...
That was back before we realized my throat symptoms were caused by reflux.
At first we thought I might have had a virus or something because of the
bad taste in the back of my throat, the sour post-nasal drip and the
tightness in my throat. Since then, all the rest of my symptoms have
been attributed to the reflux (endoscopy showed that I have a small
hiatal hernia). I have an appointment with a reflux specialist at
Stanford in a month. I'll ask her about it. I just sort of thought this
might be a common symptom of reflux into the throat, but I guess not.
I had an ulcer back there briefly and I'm pretty sure that was due to
the reflux.

Mark.
