Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

I'm seeing a GI for my acid reflux. Since it's the LPR version he denies there is such a thing. It seems as though GIs and ENTs are fighting over how to treat LPR.

I told him I need to take digestive enzymes while on these PPIs or I'll be heavily constipated. He said "What are you talking about?" He denied that taking PPIs will get you cramped beacuse of your low acid content. He also stated that digestive enzymes can do more harm than acid on the esophagus and larnyx when it gets refluxed.

Has anyone else heard that from a doctor?

Re: Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

I took digestive enzymes for a few weeks, while I tried to see if they would work instead of taking Nexium.
They made everything liquify in my stomach ASAP
and made me feel very poorly. I threw up several times while taking them I hated that!
So I stopped, what ever you do don't drink alcohol at all while your taking them. I had two drinks and got soooo sick!
Now I am taking Nexium, and feeling much better

Re: Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

Thanks for sharing that! I haven't tried the digestive enzymes yet but was considering it not long ago. I'll have to be really sick now before I try them as a last resort. I too am on Nexium so that should be enough (hopefully).

Re: Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

I've taken digestive enzymes daily for the last 9 months. The only effect it sometimes gives me is the runs. I only get that if I take a heavy dose made by 'Digest Gold'. The brands with less enzymes give me no problem. Besides that it has greatly helped food pass via my system.

I was just concerned about the staement my GI made that they can damage our insides more than acid? I asked 2 other doctors about this and they have never heard that stated. I'll be seeing an ENT on Monday so I'll ask for his opinion.

That GI also told me don't bother chewing my food longer than usual. I told him if I don't I'll get acid reflux with a swollen larnyx and hoarse voice. He's just one of those GIs denying that LPR exist. He already dilated my esophagul web so I may just stick with my ENT for further treatment.

Re: Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

I don't know about Enzymes, but I tried eating the Activia yogurt once. Every time I did, shortly after eating I would get sharp pains in my stomach. Anyway, not exactly the same, but I'd say take it slow and careful if you decide to try it.

Re: Are Digestive Enzymes Safe?

In the beginning (10 yrs ago) Dr's would say "That's not Posible." Thank goodness Dr's and not only ENT are finally admitting to a difference in GERD than LPR. I feel more comfortable being treated by an ENT spec now since when scoped no inflamation shows in stomach. I think LPR is worse, have to use aggresive treatment for longer period of time. Also, diet and stress will do you in. Do not ignore these symptoms because many long term problems can develop.

Best of Luck T You!

Charla
